Before choosing a Stainless Steel Sink for your project, there are a few things you want to know.

What is the Stainless Steel that is used? – The Stainless Steel most commonly used for kitchen sinks is Type 304. This type is composed basically of 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel and is sometimes referred to as 18-8 stainless. It is nonmagnetic and readily available in a variety of forms. This type is easy to form and fabricate with excellent resistance to corrosion.

What is Gauge? – Gauge refers to the thickness of the Stainless Steel. It can be a little confusing as the lower the “number”, the thicker the metal.

Most kitchen sinks today are either 16 or 18 gauge. While an 18 gauge sink is adequate, there are many advantages to the 16 gauge models.

  • 16 Gauge Sinks are 25% Thicker than 18 Gauge Sinks
  • 16 Gauge Sinks are Less Prone to Denting & Bowing
  • They are More Durable
  • They are More Durable
  • They Dampen Noise more than 18 Gauge Sinks

Stainless Steel Finish? – Finish refers to the surface preparation of the stainless steel.

  • Mirror Finish– The Stainless Steel is polished to an extremely smooth and shiny surface. When new, mirror finishes are beautiful but are most prone to scratches and water spots.
  • Brushed Finish – The Stainless steel is mechanically brushed to create a “grain”. This type of finish is excellent for hiding scratches but appears to be very dull.
  • Satin Finish –This finish is the best compromise between Mirror & Brushed surfaces and is the most commonly used for kitchen sinks. It is a lustrous finish without being too shiny. Washington Marble Stainless Steel Sinks incorporate this type of finish.

Sound Dampening? – In addition to the gauge of the sink improving Sound Dampening, higher quality stainless steel sinks incorporate a Sound Spray and Dampening.

  • Sound Spray– On the underside of the sink, a textured spray is used. You can quickly see if the sink is sprayed as you will not see the aluminum. This specialized spray inhibits noise.
  • Dampening Pads– Rubberized Pads are used on the sides and underneath the sink to further inhibit noise.
All of our traditional Stainless Steel Sinks are 16 Gauge nickel-bearing 304 stainless steel that incorporate a Satin Finish. They also include sound dampening pads with a spray undercoating. The drain openings are a standard 3-1/2”.
